Scripture
That’s when the Pharisees plotted a way to trap him into saying something damaging. They sent their disciples, with a few of Herod’s followers mixed in, to ask, “Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don’t pander to your students. So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said, “Why are you playing these games with me? Why are you trying to trap me? Do you have a coin? Let me see it.” They handed him a silver piece.
“This engraving—who does it look like? And whose name is on it?”
They said, “Caesar.”
“Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his.” – Matthew 22:15-21
Declaration/Prayer
Lord, it’s said the only sure things in life are death and taxes. There’s some truth to that, but Your Truth and Life eternally transcends death…and taxes too. In this life, each and every day we pay some form of taxes for public goods and services. If the purpose to “give” our taxes is part of a social contract for our collective wellbeing, then Your instructions to “give” to God seem to be part of a sacred contract that’s also for our collective wellbeing. But our giving to God goes beyond tithes & offerings and dollars & cents. Just like the coin referenced in this Gospel passage bears a famed likeness and is used for transactions, we bear Your famed likeness and can be used for transformation. So I pay tribute to You today by contributing the unique skills and talents You’ve given me to the wellbeing of all. Amen.
